Biography

Ph.D., New Mexico State University

A first-generation college student, Patty Lopez earned her BS (with honors), MS, and PhD in Computer Science from NMSU. She spent 19 years as an Imaging Scientist for Hewlett Packard, creating and transferring technology in imaging into scanner, camera, and all-in-one products. She has released over fifty products across five business lines and holds seven imaging patents. She joined Intel in 2008 and served as a Senior Platform Applications Engineer in the Intel Optane Group within the Datacenter Platforms Group at Intel Corporation, working with customers to deliver datacenter server chip and persistent memory solutions. In 2021, she retired from Intel and became an Intel Encore Computer Science Fellow in Residence at NMSU, where she worked to broaden participation in computing and to increase student engagement and graduation completion.

Patty's research area is computer science education, focusing on:

  1. Employing pedagogical methods to increase intrinsic motivation and engagement through an asset-based lens.
  2. Piloting techniques for equitable grading to increase student retention and progression.
  3. Integrating accessibility and accommodations into the design of curriculum and resources that facilitate learning and mastery.
